Sewing Retreat with Mom

When I was at my folks last summer Mom and I went to a quilt store and got a free pattern for a flag wall hanging. It was to promote using Thangles. Mom bought a pack and split them with me then never did anything with them.

She and I have been sewing like crazy people for 4 days now. I asked her since it was my last day with her was there anything she wanted to do. She said she wanted to learn to use Thangles. I thought no problem. We stopped what we were doing and dug through her stash and pulled out scraps and yardage. I cut the strips for the Thangles and pinned them to the paper. She sewed them and subcut them.

While she sewed I decided to cut some of the other pieces. I don't think we intended to make the entire project but as you can see below that is exactly what we did. She will have to hand sew the binding on and sew and hanging sleeve to the back but all in all not bad for a few hours of work.

I will be going back and will have lots of memories of sewing with Mom this trip. See you back in Texas!

Mother's First Quilt

I did not grow up in a quilter family. In fact, I don't think there were really any other craftiness other than garment sewing. I learned to crochet from the lady across the street when I was young. My mom learned later. I learned to quilt. Mom didn't express much interest until a few years ago. When I was visiting her a few summers ago I made a few tote bags. She was interested and she later made several of her own.

Earlier this year we were talking about what I was working on. She said something to the effect that she was doing something but didn't want to tell me. She relented and let me know she was making a quilt. I was so proud of her. She had quilted the center and was talking about stippling and that she didn't like how it looked so she was picking out the stitches. I haven't even stippled anything yet myself!

I present to you mom's first quilt. She did a great job and I am so proud of her!

Quilting with Mom

When I went to visit Mom earlier this year I took a Jelly Roll and pattern that I wanted us to make together. We gathered our tools and found a place to setup and get started. I let Mom start cutting her pieces first while I read from the pattern to make sure we were getting it right. After she cut for a (short) while she said to me "Why don't you cut, cutting isn't my favorite part." I took over. No problem since I had to cut mine out anyway.

After cutting hers out we went to the sewing machine. Again I had her sew while I read from the directions to make sure we were assembling the block correctly. After the first block was together and we had started assembly line sewing she said "Why don't you sew, sewing isn't my favorite part." I turned to her and asked her "Why do you quilt? Nothing seems to be your favorite part?". We both chuckled. She said she likes to quilt it is just some parts are not her favorite.

When it came time to start pressing my Mother took hold of that iron and went to town. Boy was I happy with that. Because pressing blocks is not my favorite part! Together we managed to get her top together.

We talked about what other projects she had lined up and she told me about a tablerunner she planned to make. I told her I would help her with it if she wanted me to. She asked me to show her how I cut the fabric (anyone see a pattern here?). I got setup and she read the directions to me. This time I showed her some tips on cutting to try to make it easier for her in the future. I cut almost the entire runner out with the exception of the binding and backing. We discussed that she would do that although she doesn't recall that we made that decision.

Some time after I left I got a call from her. She was putting the table runner together and apparently not enough of the border strips were cut. She told me I had to fly back up there and finish the job. She managed to finish that cutting. Here is her result.

Mother is Here!!

My parents arrived yesterday. I expected them about an hour later so didn't finish everything I planned before they arrived. I had a pile of scraps that sit on the floor in my living room and Mom made me organize it. Well, I had started...she made me finish. My sewing area looks good. We went out to dinner afterwards, came back and went to be. We were all tired from driving to get here.

Today we got up and went out to breakfast then set out on lots of errands. When we finished those I started sewing while Mom cat napped on the balcony and Dad in the recliner in front of TV. After a little while Mom joined in. We just finished up for the night about 30 minutes ago. More ripping than sewing was our clue to stop.

If you remember a few posts back I showed a bunch of bits sewn together. Below is a block we finished. And even further below is progress we made on the rest of the bits. I have 4 block sets in this quilt. Our goal is to finish a set and then take a break and do something else. Repeat til they are all done. This is my #1 UFO from Judy L's challenge. I am feeling hopeful that I will get this topped!

I got Tagged. Well I am honored to have been tagged by Leigh to name my 5 favorite or inspirational sites. Honored because she named me as one of her 5 favorites!

Please note this is in random order. And I will whine like all others when I say that it was hard to choose just five. I quickly listed 8.

I adore Triller. She is a cat that blogs with the help of her Mum Cat. She and Chelsea have some great adventures. Mum Cat is quite the artist and Triller shows off her work all the time.

Mary has the most beautiful quilts. She is very prolific and shows great pictures. She is a large part of Heartstrings and has exchanged emails with me many times to help me see why a quilt speaks to me. She is very generous with her time in many ways.

Darlene has this huge stack of UFOs. She amazes me. They don't stop her from starting new things either! I want to be more like Darlene but momma keeps asking when I am going to finish all my other stuff. She has been doing all these great little projects with charm packs. I STALK Darlene's blog and I am not afraid to admit it. I can't wait to see what new goodies she has to post.

Lisa just did an amazing quilt that she painted and then did some extremely detailed quilting on. She does such a variety of work. I like to see what she has done lately....it let's me know what is possible and inspires me to try new things.

Beth in MD is my bud. She encourages me herself. We laugh all the time as we discover one more thing we have in common. Are you keeping a list Beth? She cheers my every little accomplishment and cyber hugs me when I need it. She really helped me get through a tough year last year! Her blog is great. She has lots of lists. I push her to add more to that completed list all the time! ;) She is the Queen of UFOs in #quiltchat but I wonder if Darlene could unseat her....hmmm...watch out Beth!

So those are my 5 but I am not going to stop.....

Sharon does amazing miniatures work. She and I chat a couple times a week and she recently blogged about Blog Pressure. Gee, could that be me?!?! Sharon has lots of lovely work and shares it most generously with all. She is a sweet gal!

Beth is an inspiration to me. I was a soccer mom, now a tennis mom and will soon be a golf mom. She helps kids with chess tournaments. Any person that spends one minute helping a child is #1 in my book. I know there are many kids out there lost...not getting that "thing" they need. I had many teachers that helped me with that "thing" that I needed at the moment. Beth, I am sure there are many kids out there that will remember you for a long, long time!

Bonnie at quiltville has a great website in addition to her blog. She makes the greatest quilts and gives out her free designs. She has lots of tips about organizing your scraps. Her site is a great read. Read Bonnie's blog from March 31 and April 1, 2007. Here is proof to the world that no good deed goes unturned. She has been so generous and when she needed help it came to her ten fold. Bonnie, you are a treasure!

There are so many blogs out there that I love. I picked those that came to mind immediately. I am sure I will be remorseful that I didn't pick this one or that. There are so many that inspire me.

Judy L's UFO Challenge

UFO #10 was drawn for February. I pulled it out. I pressed it. I got the backing out. I started thinking about how to quilt it. I got a call that required me to leave LA and go back to Texas. There went any hope of finishing it. I will get it quilted this month!

UFO #1 was drawn for March. Go ahead and click on the link. I will wait here. You back? OK. While that pic is very pretty that is actually UFO #4 that is at the quilter now. Mine is a baggy of cut up little pieces. How lucky can I be? I threw that baggy in my luggage to bring back to TX. I have a sew in Friday night plus a slow work week (I am working from home). I am going to sew great guns on this. My goal is a top (and backing) for this month. Mom and Dad will be visiting me this month. Guess what Mom is going to be helping me do!

Sewing in NY

I arrived in NY this past Monday and am staying at my parents house. I will be here for 2 weeks and hoped to get some sewing time in with Mom. I had cut these quilts out in Louisiana. I have sewed a little on them for the past three days and we topped them today. Thanks Mom!

These are the BQ pattern by Maple Island Quilts. They are gifts for my best friend's kids. They are not needed until the end of August and September but I plan to see my LAer the weekend after I return and want to get them in queue to avoid last minute rushing.

I am not adding borders and am thinking about making a scrappy binding from the animal prints. What do you think?

The red is for the boy.

The green is for the girl.

Doesn't my folk's backyard look pretty?

The animal prints came from my stash and I newly purchased the rest. Almost three yards out of my stash. I hope to find the backings in my stash as well.

My Sewing Group Met Today

I dropped Mom's civil war top off to be quilted. I didn't take a picture of it but my friend did. Maybe I can get the pic from her. I will definately photograph it when I pick it up. Mom did a great job!

Remember this project? Today I added the first border to this top and put together two more centers that look just like it. I will add borders as soon as I can and post pics. I will make a goal to have them ready for design wall Monday.

I gave my son his Saratoga Lights quilt for his 17th birthday yesterday. He smiled and hugged it. True appreciation. I will post a pic of the completed quilt tomorrow.

Please come back for the eye candy!

Stashbuster Topic of the Week. How did I become a quilter? What was my first project and where is it? I did not inherit quilting from my ancestors. Both of my grandmothers worked and had large families. I am not sure if their mother's quilted either. I went home to visit my parents in the late 1980's. While I was there my mother took me to my Aunt's house. She and my cousin showed me a quilt they had made using Eleanor Burn's Quilt in a Day Log Cabin. They showed me how they used a blanket as the batting. I was hooked. Up to that point I had sewn clothing and pillows.

In 1988 or 1989 I went on vacation with my parents and husband to Myrtle Beach, SC. The guys went and did their thing and Mom and I went and did ours. We happened across a fabric store. We went in and I found Eleanor Burns book and I bought the fabric to make my mom a blue and mauve Queen size log cabin. I sort of read the book and sort of followed the directions. having sewn clothing I used my standard 5/8" seam. Oops. Needless to say her quilt wasn't quite big enough. I quilted it in the ditch using batting and not a blanket and sent it off to her. She still has the quilt but it is in her basement with seams that have started pulling apart. She is a washaholic and washed it to death. I never think to get it from her to see if it can be saved. I will have to try to remember to do that.

You know I made myself a Log Cabin as well and still hadn't read those directions closely. I also used a 5/8" seam on that one as well. I finally read the directions closely to see the error of my ways! Now I read the heck out of directions to make sure I don't repeat that mistake!

MOM

My world will never be the same.  I received a call last week from the doctor at the hospital telling me I needed to get home to NY and not wait.  Mom went into the hospital on Friday for fluid build up and low blood pressure.  The treatment gave her a heart attack from which she could not recover.  They placed her on a ventilator and heart pump.

My brother and I both left Sunday a.m.  He from Louisiana and I from Texas arriving within 10 minutes of one another on Monday.  While she showed slight improvement it was clear that she would not recover and we removed her from life support on Wednesday.

We buried her yesterday on a beautiful sunny afternoon.  She is just down the hill from her parents and on the same road from her two baby daughters.  I smile when I think that she now has the opportunity to finish raising my sisters.  I will miss her.

If you click here you will find some stories that I wrote about her on my blog.  She was a great quilting buddy.  I always told her I got the best Mother.

I disappeared again

That was not my intention. But my string of bad luck seems to continue. After my fun day on town I was hit with an eye infection and a few more "sores" popped up. Monday I had a tummy bug strike me down. Sent me home for a loooong nap to recover. Went to the doc the next day and he gave me more meds. He warned me to watch for side effects from the antibiotics since I have been on them for over 30 days straight now. I am watching.

Wednesday I got a call from dh that he was heading to the ER again. He thought he was having the same issue he had last time. I made another mad dash home. He was out by Friday. They gave him more meds. When he got out he still had gut issues. I arranged to stay home this past week just in case. When he was in the hospital they did a heart cath that they had planned to do. He has a heart issue that he needs to get resolved and is off the transplant list until it is. They think it will be July or August and feel meds can manage it.

My Dad started his second round of chemo. It went better this time than it had the first time. My Aunt Fran, his sister, has been in the hospital for several weeks and Dad was struggling with this. He didn't want to go to the hospital after his chemo for fear of catching something. He had a test scheduled at the hospital she was in and did manage to go by. It took a long time to diagnose her but they finally told her pancreatic cancer. She was given three months last week and passed a week later, this past Thursday. Dad was having his second chemo during this. I know he is stressed. To add to the drama I have a bachelor Uncle that lived with Aunt Fran. There was a family agreement that he would move in with my cousin if something happened to Aunt Fran. This cousin assured my Aunt Fran's kids that she would keep her promise. Later that same evening she called Dad to say she would not be honoring this promise. Now Dad is trying to figure out what to do. Neither of my parents have the greatest health and my uncle does not know how to cook or wash his clothes. Dad told Mom he wished he didn't have cancer as he would take himin. Mom didn't say anything since she would have to carry the extra load. We will see how this plays out.

So on a happier note. DS passed his permit test. He won't get his permit until I have gone back to Monroe. I can't wait to take him driving. Acually I have mixed emotions. Fear and happiness! LOL! And, last week, my little baby shaved his face for the first time. He isn't old enough to be doing that!

New Years Eve Challenge I saw this challenge popping up across several blogs and decided to join. I have only 3 UFOs left to finish. I am also going to see if I can start and finish a few other quilts as well. Hope you will join us!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Kentucky I drove to Kentucky a few weekends ago. When I got home I started to notice a rattling noise in my bumper whenever I closed my back gate. I wondered what it could be and after about the third time I shut that door and heard that rattle it finally dawned on me.

2 years ago I bought a RAV4. My parents came down not too long after. Mom was in the back seat and I heard her say something to the effect of oops! She dropped a handful of coins and they went into the seat. When I lifted the seats and looked under them I could not find any coins. There is a space under the back for storage. I opened that and looked in there. Still no coins. I walked away and never thought about them again.

Then the rattle. I wondered if those coins somehow worked their way down into my bumper. I just didn't think it could be possible. One day I noticed pennies on the ground. Hmmmm... the next time I shut that back door.....no rattle. I think it was that constant vibration of the long road trip to KY. I told mom the story and she thought she dropped more than pennies. She pointed out that the others could have fallen out on the road. Mystery solved....perhaps...

Here is another RR I completed my step on this month. Amy don't look if you want to be surprised!

A Bonnie New Year Tradition

Each Christmas my best friend asks me what I would like for a gift.  I have told her that I do not want anything but she won't accept that answer.  In 2013 I got the idea that I would like a quilt class and it just so happens that Bonnie Hunter comes and does her NYE mystery in Plano.  So I asked for a Bonnie Hunter class!  I have received this gift two years in a row now!

The 2013 mystery resulted in Lazy Sunday which was published in Quiltmaker later that year.  For 2014 she came up with her next mystery.  This too will be published in Quiltmaker.  We are allowed to share the block pre-publication but not the quilt.  I got to meet Allison who you see Bonnie refer to on her blog from time to time.  You will hear more about Allison very soon.  This quilt was meant to be rainbow scrappy.  I pulled neutrals from both my stash and my mothers.  I then pulled the rainbow from mom's scraps and stash.  I am glad it turned out that way because I will have another quilt from my mom and I couldn't help but think about her the entire time I was putting this together.

Sadly I got news that same day, New Years Day, that my father had fallen at home and was taken to the hospital.  He lived in New York at the time and there was no way for me to get there in any hurry so I stayed for the class.  Dad and I discussed it and agreed that we would act in the "wait and see" mode.

I have not progressed on that quilt since the class but I truly look forward to getting back to it.  More to come on Dad, Allison and this Bonnie NYE mystery quilt!

I have so many projects that I want to complete. I have made a "To Do" list to help me stay on track. I am a member of Stashbusters which has an UFO challenge and also a No Buy challenge. I have signed up for both. I already have so much fabric that I don't really need anymore. The UFO on top of my list is a Rail Fence that is meant for a baby that is now 8 years old. Luckily the quilt is 45x60 and a good size even for an adult. I stopped my UFO work to get Christmas gifts done and some swaps that I was a member of. I need to really assess everything I sign up for to ensure it doesn't detract from my goals of finishing things and reducing my stash.

In 2006:
  • had 10 UFOs
  • completed 2
  • started 2 new quilts that were not finished

This means I start 2007 out with 10 UFOs. 2006 has been the most productive sewing/quilting year for me in a very long time. I decided I needed to get back to it and have been very successful.

2006 accomplishments:

  • tote bag swap completed
  • finished my Chicken applique quilt
  • fixed my friends parallelogram quilt
  • designed and appliqued/embroidered a block for "12 Days of Christmas" swap. I had day 2 and created 2 Texas Wildflowers
  • participated in my first mystery quilt "Chain Events". Great experience.
  • created my first crazy quilt piece. A Christmas stocking swapped off to my buddy ozicutsnake in Australia
  • made 4 placemats for Mom for Christmas
  • made fleece socks for Dad for Christmas
  • various clothing mending projects. Ick

There are probably more. I picked up loom knitting and have a list of completed knitted items as well. Will post those another time.

Decluttering with the KonMari Method

I have spent a good amount of my life acquiring things.  But now I spend a good amount of my life de-cluttering things.  I find myself attached to the silliest of things.  I would get attached to my kids toys for example.  I at some point managed to let go of things.  I had to find a good steward of my things that I could entrust with these treasures.  It helped.  I told the recipients to never tell me when they let go of these items.

When my husband passed away I still had to find a good steward for my things.  But I was willing to let a lot more go because I knew that someone could make good use of his things NOW not later.  I let go of piles and piles of clothes and shoes to name a few.

Many of you  have heard of FlyLady. She has you work on your daily routine which includes dishes and quick swish of the toilet for example.  Then she has you work on a room a week going around the room in a methodical way sorting and getting rid of things for a specified amount of time.  She made sure you left time at the end of your session to properly take care of your sorted piles.  You repeated week after week until theoretically you were done.  I needed her when I first started getting rid of things.  I think she appealed to the depressed and overwhelmed.  She encouraged you to just do something, anything, but keep trying.  I was pretty good about following along with her weekly email reminders.  She was getting you to clean a bit as well.

When I had my house fire I had a big wipe the slate clean moment.  I moved back into my house and everything was freshly cleaned, painted and put back together again.  I had a garage full of boxes and 2 storage units filled with boxes and stuff.  My house had what I wanted in the rooms at the time.  I went to the task of getting all the things in the garage sorted and given away or put away.  I then had the daunting task of bringing everything from storage and putting it in my garage.  Actually it was all hauled out onto the driveway and was sorted into categories.  Some of the things I knew I wanted to keep or to spend more time sorting through were placed in the attic for storage.  Then there were the things that I could sort through relatively quickly and get rid of.  I still had too much.  This was in May of 2012.  This is when I started disposing of my husbands things in earnest..

I began bringing in boxes to be sorted from the garage.  I would put the boxes where I thought I wanted the contents ultimately stored.  It didn't take long to clutter things up again.  I did my best and tried to keep things grouped together.

The following year my mother passed away.  My Dad insisted that I take whatever I wanted of hers before I left town after the funeral.  I took what I could and gave away what I did not want.  I reasoned with Dad and he agreed to let me set aside the larger items to be picked up when I could return.  What I did bring back from those trips just added to the clutter.  More clothes, furniture, fabric and sewing paraphernalia.  The water was rising in an already over my head depth.  I continued to try to sort and give away.  The strong emotional attachment was there again.  Even worse than before.  But I continued to pick away at the clutter.

About 7 months after Mom passed I got a call from Dad that he was sick and had fallen at home.  I ultimately had to go to him to help sort his medical situation out and make some decisions about his future.  Long story short we packed up his house, sold it and he moved in with me along with all his stuff.  By the end of May he passed away.  Now I had all his stuff to deal with.  More furniture, clothes and stuff in general.  Not to mention all the paper and the estate to settle.  Again,  the picking and choosing of what to give away continued.  More stuff to the attic, more giving away of large objects.  Still identifying those good stewards of my parents precious things.

I am not exactly sure how I came across the KonMari method.  She is so totally different than FlyLady.  She has five categories that she wants you to work on.  The first of which is clothes.  She wants you to gather all your clothes into once place regardless of the season they are for.  She wants you to be shocked by how much stuff you have.  She then wants you to touch each item and if it "sparks joy" you keep it, otherwise you dispose of the item.  She encourages you to thank it for serving its purpose in your life.  She also encourages you to quickly move through this activity and stick with it until you have gone through all your clothes.

I have neither the energy nor time to gather ALL my clothing into one place and do a massive sort.  Not yet at least.  But I did realize that I had two laundry baskets piled high with socks.  I would start there.  How did I get so many socks?  Well there were Mark's socks that fit me and I liked to wear.  There were the socks that my mother did not like for either her or Dad and she passed them to me.  Then when they both passed I inherited their socks.  Ray's socks were mixed in there and so were my son's.  My daughter had a few cast offs but for the most part she manages her own socks.

I went through the basket and started pairing up things.  I then selected the socks that belonged to each person.  I chose a number for each person and more or less stopped picking the ones I liked when I hit it.  I still had a huge basket full of good, wearable socks that are now paired and sitting in a tote awaiting donation this weekend.  There were very few that I threw away because they were stained or holey.

The difference this time is that I was choosing what to keep rather than what to get rid of.  If I went with the philosophy of only keeping the good and tossing the bad then I was stuck in the cycle of still hanging on to too much.  For some reason choosing what to keep gave me the right mindset to let go of the excess good.  I still have socks that are mismatched.  Over time I will realize what is not mated and never will be and will toss them or donate them to someones sock puppet project.  But I can see how this change will make a huge difference for me.

Double Wedding Ring Quilts

I think I own every single pattern and template there is to make a Double Wedding Ring quilt. I was driven by my mothers desire to own one. Ultimately, I bought an antique one and gifted it to her. She passed four years ago and that quilt is now in my collection.

In November of 2012 I pulled out a Double Wedding Ring quilt UFO that I bought at a garage sale and asked Mom to pick out the hideous purple pieces that were used as the background. She happily did so and sadly I came down with some sort of flu so we didn't spend much time together. At the time I did not know this would be the last project she and I would work on together before she passed the following May.

This is the background.

Here are my choices for a replacement. Preferences?

Here are all the choices together. Which do you prefer?

I bought the Accuquilt GO die. I hope the pieces are the same size. Will report back but help me choose first!

Happy New Year

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year.  I hope its a good one.

I have been reading peoples accounting of their 2014 quilting accomplishments for 2014". While I did not accomplish as much as I would have liked I did more than I thought.  I competed 2 Harley Davidson quilts, both bed size.  I made a microwave bowl and I made great progress on my dd's t-shirt quilt.

In addition to quilting I managed to finish a crocheted afghan throw and completed a baby afghan my mother had started.  I also finished another of her afghans that was intended for my father.  I count it complete but still have lots of threads to weave in.  Mom had one more afghan that I am currently working on and hope to complete soon.

I started Bonnie Hunters mystery and just took her New Year mystery class at Fabric Fanatics.  I hope this will keep me going forward with my sewing into this year.

I will share pics going forward.  Hope you will comment to let me know you are still reading my blog.

Hugs,

Swooze

3 Quilts Cut Out?

Did I really say that? Hmmm.

I have "It's a Wrap" totally cut out. Mom and I made her top together while I was visiting in NY. I cut mine out asvI cut hers. I did most of the sewing as well so putting mine together should go quickly. I sewed a few pieces together last night so it appears I am starting here.

Then I have "Bamboo and Pinwheels" cut out. This is a two for one quilt. As you cut and sew the leftovers are used to make a second quilt. I think I am stuck on this one due to having to randomly pull pieces and sew them together. Maybe it will be easier since I had to choose fabrics similarly for the "It's a Wrap". I should get this sewn soon since I am not sure I have enough Asian FQ's and will be in Dallas next week where there is an abundance available.

The third...oh yes. This is the Moda pattern Pampered Pooch that I am making with the Pampered Pooch line in Red, White and Blue. I am not sure I have enough of my background so I am a little blocked on this one. I really should get sewing since it may be harder to find the fabric the longer I wait.

Decision Made

Once we knew there was not going to be any further treatment for Dad and that he could not be left alone, my plan to return to Texas to get ready was out the window.  I had a job opportunity materiializing with no date set.  I decided that I wanted to be back in Texas by March 10th ready to report to work.  This did not mean that I wanted to be pulling into the driveway the night before either.  We called my brother and told him the plan and made at\\arrangements to fly him back to NY in the next few weeks.

I packed the house with the help of several cousins, friends and Ray.  We sold things that would not be making the trip,  Donated a lot of clothing items and anything else we felt would not sell.  When my brother arrived the majority of things had been packed.  The moving truck had been picked up and was sitting on the driveway.  We all got up the next morning and the guys loaded the truck.  I finished packing things and took care of closing the house down, so to speak.  None of this fun nor easy but necessary.

My Dad and I pulled out of the driveway as a big snow storm hit.  We had to drop off cable equipment and gas up.  Ray left in our vehicle with Dad's dog Buddy.  We were about an hour behind Ray.  I was letting Dad acts as my GPS but it quickly became apparent that was not going to work.  I was supposed to be travelling along the southern part of New York and somehow ended up in Rochester,  Dad had been showing signs of dementia and it was really showing itself with all the stress of the move.  He was trying to circle us back around and take us back home.  I turned on the real GPS.  We drove quite a ways and made it to Ohio.  I was near the halfway point when we stopped.  We spent the night and got up and drove to Texas the next day.  I was laying in my own bed the morning of Match 1st.  Ray arrived shortly after us.

My brother left the day after we did doing some final packing and cleanup before hitting the road.  He went to his house and unloaded part of the items then delivered the rest to my house and unloaded then returned the moving truck.  I was never so happy to have all this over.  It was a nightmare that included me having to call EMS for help to get Dad into the hotel we stayed at.  I have said enough on that topic!

While packing I came across this UFO of my mothers.  She had started this for my Dad and quickly grew tired of it.  All the yarn was with it,  I could not tell what the original plan was.  I layed it out and chose the design and had to make 3 additional squares.  The joke between Mom and Dad was whether he would ever get his afghan.  I have the top together and am tying in all the loose ends.  I throw it on Dad when he needs a blanket.  I know I will edge it but at least he has it and uses it.  He got his afghan!

Another bit of happy news is that the day we arrived in Texas I had a text from the realtor telling me to check my email and respond by 5.  We had a sales offer on the house.  After a little back and forth we had a contract.  The house is sold!  The attorney handling the deal for us has Dad's POA and will represent him at the closing.  That chapter of our lives will soon come to a close sadly.  It is hard to let that house go but life is what it is.

Stay tuned.  I am almost caught up with everything.  I will get quilty again very soon!!
